Multiple crews tackle residential Surrey fire

The Surrey Fire Service has multiple crews on scene at a residential fire Sunday.

Speaking to CityNews, SFS Assistant Chief of Operations Greg McRobbie says firefighters received calls about “a large column of black smoke” in the city’s Port Kells neighbourhood around 1:15 p.m.

McRobbie says crews found the fire, along 92 Avenue between 184 and 187 streets, centered at an outbuilding or shop at the back of the property.

Other items nearby, including a vehicle, were engulfed in flames.

In photos posted to social media, thick black smoke could be seen billowing into the air from the Golden Ears Bridge.

McRobbie says fire crews, including 24 firefighters, were able to access the fire, and knocked it down by 1:55 p.m.

“There was no injuries. Crews are just hitting hotspots now, and we’ll be there for about another hour or two,” he said.

As for what started the fire, McRobbie says crews will be able to determine the cause after an investigation.
