Murder charges laid after Surrey assault victim dies

The Surrey RCMP says the victim of an assault on Aug. 18 has died, leading to two men being charged with second-degree murder.

Two men have been charged with second-degree murder after a Surrey assault victim died in hospital Wednesday night, police say.

The Surrey RCMP says the 55-year-old man died after receiving “significant life-threatening injuries” during an altercation on Friday night.

Police say 31-year-old Parminder Singh Brar and 21-year-old Simarpal Singh remain in custody.

Last week, the RCMP says officers received reports just before 11:30 p.m. on Aug. 18 of a man walking around a parking lot with a machete in the area of King George Boulevard and 102 Avenue.

“While police were on route to the call, they were provided updates that the man had allegedly struck a vehicle with the machete and an altercation had ensued with two of the vehicle occupants,” explained Corp. Vanessa Munn.

“It’s absolutely concerning to see that something like this did escalate to where it ended up with someone with significant life-threatening injuries in the hospital. We do always encourage anyone who witnesses anything to contact police and not to necessarily get involved themselves,” Munn added at the time.

The Surrey RCMP says it will maintain conduct of the investigation after consulting with the Lower Mainland Integrated Homicide Investigation Team.
