B.C. truck company ‘suspended pending investigation’ after North Van overpass crash

The B.C. government says a trucking company has been “suspended pending investigation” after one of its vehicles crashed into a North Vancouver overpass Tuesday night.

According to the province’s updated “Bridge Strikes Data” page, the cause of the suspension is due to “carrier/driver error: no permit.”

The Whistler 99 Courier and Freightways Corporation truck hit the Main Street overpass on Highway 1 around 7 p.m., leading to an hours-long closure of the road.

The road didn’t reopen until around 3 a.m.

The North Vancouver RCMP said in an update Wednesday that it was determined the driver of truck had “fled the scene of the accident,” and that the registered owner of the company the truck belongs to “was issued a failure to remain at the scene of an accident violation ticket.”

Tuesday night marked the latest incident involving a truck crashing into a Lower Mainland overpass.

Earlier in September, the province says United Coastal Logistics Ltd. was issued a violation after the Gilmore overpass over Highway 1 was hit. A month prior, the CP overpass was hit on Highway 1, resulting in a violation ticket for Road Runner Freight Inc., which was found to have no permit.

In July, Highway 99 in Delta was closed for nearly 20 hours after a truck hit the Highway 17 overpass. The hours-long closure was required so workers could conduct what maintenance crews described as “extensive concrete removal.” That incident remains under investigation, the B.C. government’s page says, noting possible enforcement against Bright Sky Disposal Ltd. is pending.
