BC Ferries payment system problems resolved, corporation says

BC Ferries says problems with its debit and credit card payment systems at some of its ferry terminals have been resolved.

In an email, the corporation says a number of terminals started coming back online just before 9 a.m., and BC Ferries spokesperson Deb Marshall says the source of the problem was an “internal technical change which caused a communication issue between our POS systems and our payment processor.”

Callers told CityNews Tuesday around 6 a.m. that point-of-sale transactions were down at the Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal. The ferry service confirmed the outages were being felt across its entire system.

“As soon as we were alerted to the situation, extra ticket agents were called in to assist our customers,” the statement from BC Ferries to CityNews explained. “Our automated self-serve kiosks were functioning normally at our terminals and we did not experience any issues with payment services on board our vessels.”

BC Ferries also warned customers that the problems with the payment system had the potential to trigger sailing delays.

“Several sailings around the fleet were delayed as our ticket agents were processing credit card transactions manually,” the corporation confirmed.

The outages come after the ferry service was forced to cancel sailings Monday due to high winds from a localized “bomb cyclone” storm.
