Vancouver police say a man is dead after an assault left him “badly injured” in the Chinatown neighbourhood Thursday.
According to the VPD, officers responded to the area of Carrall Street and East Hastings Street around 5:15 a.m. The man was taken to the hospital where he died of his injuries.
“Sadly it’s our 12th homicide of the year in Vancouver,” said Sgt. Steve Addison Thursday.
“Our homicide investigators are on the scene, they’re likely going to be there throughout the day — possibly even into tomorrow — collecting evidence. So doing the normal things like looking for video, evidence, canvassing for witnesses, looking for forensic evidence that might be at the crime scene.”
Police say the victim has yet to be identified and add no arrests have been made.
“While we don’t have a suspect in custody at this time, we’re hoping and trust that the evidence that we collect will lead us to the person who is responsible for this. We’ve got some more work to do though,” Addison said.
“Homicide investigations can be complex. They’re the most serious investigations that we conduct and we’ve got to do it right.”
Officers blocked Carrall Street between East Hastings and East Pender streets to conduct their investigation.
Previously the VPD said the incident was north of Cordova Street in Gastown.
The VPD is asking anyone with information to call the VPD Homicide unit at 604-717-2500.
