The woman who was fatally stabbed in New Westminster last week is being remembered as an “amazing mother and a loving daughter” in a GoFundMe set up to support her loved ones.

Kulwant Kaur was found with stab wounds when officers arrived at the area of Suzuki Street near Salter Street Friday evening. Police say she died at the scene despite first responders’ efforts.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) previously said 57-year-old Balvir Singh was taken into custody in connection with the fatal stabbing and charged with second-degree murder. IHIT has said this “appears to be an isolated incident between family members.”

The GoFundMe campaign says Kaur “came to Canada in 2019 to give her son a better life and brighter future.”

“She was taken too soon at a young age of 46. She was a hardworking, kind, caring person and was looking to make a better life for her and her son,” the fundraiser’s organizers write.

According to the GoFundMe, Kaur’s parents are flying in from India. The money raised by the campaign is expected to be divided between them and Kaur’s nephew, who had arrived in Canada just days before his aunt’s death.

“We want to cover the cost of her funeral. She doesn’t have anything,” said Gurpreet Sangha, who tells OMNI News both she and Kaur’s children attended the same school.

“She has no one here. So if we could just even cover the cost of her funeral. Any money that’s going to be remaining will go to the family to help them with their situation, to help with her son.”

Friends and family tell OMNI News Kaur’s son has since been taken into Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) care.

“Our goal is basically to get him home, and right now, home is here,” an emotional Sangha said.
