At least 3 injured in Granville Station escalator malfunction

An escalator malfunction at Granville Station in Vancouver in September left at least three people injured.

TransLink says the incident took place on Sept. 29 but wasn’t able to shed any light on the extent of these injuries.

The transit company says the escalator malfunction remains under investigation, adding that the automatic stairways have been shut down since the incident.

“It’s my understanding that it may have caught some people off guard … they may have bumped into each other, bunched up at the bottom of the escalator,” a spokesperson said to CityNews, noting that the escalator may have suddenly accelerated.

As TransLink explains, the escalator is maintained and managed by its manufacturer and is expected to be running again by next week.

The escalators at Granville Station are notably on the newer side, having been installed in 2020.
