Bear attack in Salmon Arm leaves one injured: BCCOS

A woman was knocked down by a bear Tuesday morning while out for a run in Salmon Arm, according to the BC Conservation Officer Service.

At approximately 11 a.m., officers say the woman was jogging down a trail in southwest Salmon Arm near 50 Avenue SW, when the bear knocked her over, bit and shook her.

The bear then disengaged and left the area, officers add.

“The woman is being treated in hospital for minor injuries,” they state.

At the end of September, the BCCOS had attended 1,197 calls about black bears and “destroyed” a total of 460 black bears since the start of the year, according to data from the service.

The RCMP and BC Emergency Health Services also responded to the morning attack. Conservation officers say they canvassed the area for several hours after the attack but the bear was not seen again in the vicinity.

“Signage has been installed in the area and officers have canvassed nearby residences,” officers said. “The COS will provide updates as the investigation continues.”
