West Vancouver rental protection motion shot down by council

West Vancouver District councillors shot down a proposal on Monday that was aimed at protecting 30 properties in the Ambleside area as rental-only in the future.

The majority of the buildings outlined in the motion were purpose-built as rentals as long ago as the 1960s.

The buildings now mostly house middle or low-income seniors who, on average, pay 1,000 less than other rentals in West Vancouver.

If passed, the move would have restricted property owners’ ability to redevelop the buildings. If they are eventually redeveloped, it could result in a permanent loss of rental housing in the area.
