Busy day for travellers, so expect delays on ferries and at airport

It’s expected to be a busy day for anyone travelling by land, sea, or air this weekend, as people race home for the holidays.

BC Ferries says today is one of the most popular days for people to catch a sailing from the Lower Mainland to Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast, and Vancouver’s airport is also expecting crowds this weekend.

Deborah Marshall with BC Ferries says travellers should be be prepared to wait if they don’t have bookings for this Saturday or Sunday.

“Customers who are looking to travel on those particular days, we would recommend making a booking or there might be some overloads that customers can expect if they’re travelling now without a booking,” Marshall said.

YVR president Tamara Vrooman says the airport expects about two million travellers this month, but the flying weather looks good.

“However, we are ready and we did publish and have enacted a full winter readiness plan just in case,” she said. “Our two busiest routes are actually from Toronto and Calgary, so those two cities can see winter weather, even when we don’t.”

This comes after last year’s travel chaos when a snow storm delayed or cancelled dozens of flights, leaving many travellers stranded.

YVR says if don’t want to miss your flight, you can arrive early and use YVR Express to avoid waiting in line at your security checkpoint.
