Mounties in Maple Ridge say speed is believed to have played a role in a crash Friday night that claimed the life of one person and sent another to the hospital with serious injuries.
First responders received reports of the collision on the Haney Bypass near 227 Street around 7:30 p.m.
When officers arrived, they say they found a white Pontiac Sunfire and a grey Honda Civic, both with “major damage.” Both BC Emergency Health Services and members of the Maple Ridge Fire Department were already at the scene.
According to witnesses, the Pontiac Sunfire reportedly crossed into the oncoming lane before it crashed with the Honda Civic.
Police say a third vehicle was hit by flying debris, though the driver of that Kia Rio was not physically hurt.
The 39-year-old Abbotsford driver of the Pontiac died at the scene, while the driver of the Honda was taken to the hospital.
The incident shut the Haney Bypass between Burnett Street and 227 Street for several hours Friday evening.
Mounties note support for anyone who may have seen what happened or was “affected in any way” by the crash to contact the Victim Services line at 604-467-7650.
The Ridge Meadows RCMP is asking anyone with video or who may have seen what happened to contact investigators at 604-463-6251.
