Pedestrian fatally hit by vehicle in downtown Vancouver, police investigating

A pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle in downtown Vancouver Friday morning.

The Vancouver Police Department says the incident happened at Drake and Howe streets at around 5:50 a.m. when the person stepped out onto the road and “attempted to cross” the street.

Police say the driver was travelling south on Howe and did not see the pedestrian. The victim died at the scene.

The VPD says its initial investigation suggests that the driver was entering the intersection on a green light when the incident happened. The driver remained at the scene, police add.

The intersection was temporarily closed while police were on scene.

The victim has yet to be identified, police say.

Witnesses, and anyone with dash cam footage of the area, are being urged to come forward to police and call 604-717-3012.
