Rush-hour changes at Massey Tunnel begin Monday

If you usually take Highway 99 to and from work, it might be a good idea to factor in some extra time beginning Monday.

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure says the George Massey Tunnel’s counterflow operations are changing beginning March 11, as works get underway to upgrade the system.

The ministry says during the upgrade, the existing lane-control system will be offline for four weeks and replaced with manual counterflow operations.

“During peak commuting times, traffic-control crews will manually install the counterflow using a combination of traffic-control vehicles, traffic-control personnel, and traffic devices, such as cones and barriers, to safely guide traffic using the tunnel,” the ministry explained in a statement.

“The manual counterflow will be in place from approximately 5:45 a.m. until 9:30 a.m., and 3 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. on weekdays, the same time windows currently in place.”

CityNews Traffic Anchor Ryan Lidemark explains this means drivers won’t be able to change lanes when exiting the tunnel to get to Steveston Highway or River Road.

If you need to take those exits, you must be in the right lane before entering the tunnel.

The Massey Tunnel will also be fully closed overnight from April 4 to April 8 to complete the upgrades.

“During this period of manual counterflow operations, drivers are asked to use caution, obey the posted speed limit, watch for traffic-control personnel,” the ministry added.
