Burnaby apartment evacuated after fire breaks out in unit

Nobody was seriously hurt after a fire broke out at an apartment building in Burnaby Thursday afternoon.

Firefighters were called to the property along Grange Street around 4 p.m. after receiving reports of smoke inside the high rise.

The fire was found to be on the 23rd floor and is believed to have originated in the kitchen, Assistant Chief Derek Masaro tells CityNews.

“All occupants of the suite were out, and we evacuated the rest of the building,” he said.

“We sent a crew up to a primary search and we put the fire out.”

Masaro says 23 firefighters were on scene for the second-alarm fire.

He says, for the most part, building occupants have been able to return home.

“There’s possibly some water damage to a suite beneath it, but most residents are allowed back in the building,” he said.

Two people were treated for minor injuries after the fire.

Investigators are working to determine the cause of the blaze.
