Amid warnings of an early start to B.C.’s wildfire season, the BC SPCA is reminding you to make sure your pets are part of your emergency exit plan.
To ensure an efficient exit if disaster encroaches, the organization says pets need a go-bag too.
The BC SPCA reccommends prioritizing packing your pet’s photographs, microchip information, medications and medical records.
Keeping a collar and tag on your pets at all times with your home phone number and address is also important, it adds, in case your pets get separated from you.
For a more permanent ID, the BC SPCA says you can also get your pet microchipped or tattooed so they can be identified if they slip their collar.
If you and your pet do get separated, the SPCA says registering your pet with the BC Pet Registry can help expedite their return.
Pets that are trickier to move, like fish or farm animals, can be described in a sign taped to your door, the BC SPCA says. This way, emergency officials will know to look for them when a disaster occurs.
Other important items on the SPCA’s emergency checklist include packing leashes, waste bags, carriers and enough food, water and treats for one week.
Toys or blankets can also help your pet feel more comfortable if they’re forced to shelter in a strange place.
