Inmate assaulted at B.C. maximum-security prison

An inmate was injured during an assault at a maximum-security prison in B.C. on Tuesday.

In a statement released Thursday, Correctional Service Canada (CSC) explained the incident happened at the Kent Institution in Agassiz.

“The injured inmate was evaluated by staff members and transported to an outside hospital to receive treatment,” CSC said.

“The Agassiz detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the institution are presently investigating the incident.”

The CSC says the suspects have been “identified and the appropriate actions have been taken.”

No other inmates of CSC staff were injured during the assault, the CSC says, adding that the safety and security of institutions, staff, and the public “remains the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system.”

The CSC says it is now undertaking a review into the circumstances that led up to the incident to ensure it doesn’t occur again.
