New West’s Columbia Street closed as part of Pattullo Bridge work

A major street in New Westminster is closed for a month beginning Tuesday due to the Pattullo Bridge replacement project.

Columbia Street between McBride Boulevard and Elliot Street will be shut to traffic until at least the end of the month.

The City of New Westminster says the closure will also affect the Central Valley Greenway.

The city says the closure is needed in order to hang girders between the foundations of the new Pattullo Bridge.

“An additional closure of Front Street will be required to install girders and build the new bridge deck over the roadway which will last six months, beginning after Columbia Street has opened again. Information on the exact start date is not yet available,” the city said Tuesday.

The provincial government says the Pattullo Bridge Replacement Project is needed as the current bridge has only one narrow sidewalk with no protection from traffic.
