1 person dead after crash on HWY 99 in Delta

One person is dead after a single-vehicle crash in Delta Wednesday morning.

BC Highway Patrol says it received reports of a crash along Highway 99 just after 8:30 a.m. Police say the vehicle had collided into a lamp post just south of Highway 17.

“The vehicle caught on fire with the driver inside. Tragically, the driver has passed away. The cause of the collision is still under investigation,” BC Highway Patrol said in an email.

Speaking to CityNews, Corp. Melissa Jongema explained the cause of the collision is still under investigation, and the driver has not yet been identified.

Callers to CityNews say firefighters arrived and quickly began extinguishing the flames.

“There was a lot of problems with the fire after the fire was initially put out,” Jongema added. “Smoke started coming visible [again] and they had to return.”

The offramp to River Road and Highway 17 is closed while police and fire are on scene.
