Burnaby man charged with murder after fatal stabbing in Vancouver

Police in Vancouver say a Burnaby man has been charged with second-degree murder in relation to a stabbing that killed a woman at the beginning of April.

The Vancouver Police Department says around 6 a.m. on April 3, police responded to reports of “screams” and a woman lying on Rosemont Drive in the city’s Fraserview neighbourhood.

“The woman, identified as 49-year-old Gertrude Cheong, had been fatally stabbed, and died at the scene,” police said in an update Tuesday.

Insp. Michael Rowe confirmed Tuesday Cheong “has been in contact with the police before,” though he would not elaborate.

The VPD says investigators identified the suspect and arrested 29-year-old Burnaby man Eric Lau on April 4.

Police add that the BC Prosecution Service approved one count of second-degree murder on Monday, April 15.

“The investigation has established that the victim and accused knew each other,” police said.

Investigators are now asking anyone with information who has not yet spoken to police to call the VPD’s Homicide Unit at 604-717-2500.
