Onotera went missing in the summer of 2021, which prompted a massive search.

She was last seen leaving her home near 200 Street and 50 Avenue in Langley on Aug. 28, 2021.

The 40-year-old was a teacher-librarian at Surrey’s Katzie Elementary School and a mother to a 20-month-old daughter.

While first treated as a missing person case, the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team was called in just a couple of weeks later to help the Langley RCMP with its investigation.

Police said at the time that her mother reported her disappearance to police.

Onotera’s remains were found in December 2021.

Regis’ trial began on Monday when he initially pleaded not guilty.
