West Vancouver Highway 1 head-on crash kills 2, injures 3 more

The West Vancouver Police Department says a late-night multi-vehicle crash has killed two people.

Police say the incident happened around 11:40 p.m. Wednesday when a vehicle travelling “eastbound in the westbound lanes” near Westport Road caused a “head-on collision.”

The crash resulted “in the tragic death of two people and sending the remaining passengers to hospital,” the WVPD said Thursday morning.

The WVPD temporarily closed Highway 1 westbound from just past the Caulfeild Drive exit near Westport Road. The highway reopened fully just after 9:35 a.m.

The Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service was on scene all morning investigating. Due to the temporary closure, traffic is still heavy in the area.

“West Vancouver Police Department extends our deepest condolences to the family and friends of those impacted and thanks the West Vancouver public for their patience and cooperation.”

BC Emergency Health Services tells CityNews it received a call at 11:45 p.m. Wednesday about a motor vehicle incident on Highway 1.

“Seven ambulances with primary care and advanced care paramedics and a supervisor attended the scene. Paramedics provided emergency medical treatment and transported three patients to hospital,” said paramedic public information officer Brian Twaites.

Access to the BC Ferries Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal was blocked overnight while the highway was closed.

In a statement, BC Ferries said earlier Thursday that due to the crash, crew members were unable to get to work, and the “Horseshoe Bay (Vancouver) – Departure Bay (Nanaimo) vessel is currently holding in dock.”

“The 6:30 am sailing from Horseshoe Bay will be delayed as we are unable to transport customers safely without the federally required number of crew,” it said. The sailing eventually left the dock around 8 a.m.

In a follow-up statement, BC Ferries expects the 9:05 a.m., 11:25 a.m., and 1:40 p.m. sailings to also be delayed.

“Please check Current Conditions if you are looking to travel with us today,” the ferry service said. “For customers with reservations, please arrive during the check-in window noted in your booking confirmation email to maintain your reserved status. This ensures we can stage your vehicle at the terminal ahead of standby customers and those reserved on later sailings.”

For travellers who will not be able to make it to the terminal in time for their sailings due to the highway closure, BC Ferries says it will “do our best to accommodate you, recognizing the significant volumes of travellers expected today heading into the long weekend.”

“We know you have important places to be and appreciate your patience as we navigate this unexpected impact,” it shared.

“Our thoughts are with those involved in the tragic collision on Highway 1.”
