An early morning crash along Highway 99 in Surrey has killed one person, the Surrey RCMP says.
Mounties say the incident happened around 1:30 a.m. Thursday, when officers received reports of the single-vehicle crash.
“Police arrived at [the] scene to find a woman in her early 20’s who had been ejected from the vehicle and was deceased,” Sgt. James Mason said in a statement.
“Two other occupants were located trapped in the vehicle and later taken to hospital for further assessment. [The] driver of the vehicle is a 23-year-old man and passenger is a 22-year-old man,” he added.
Police closed the highway northbound, north of King George Boulevard, as they investigated for nearly 12 hours Thursday. Mounties say that through their preliminary investigation, they believe speed was a factor in the fatal crash.
As of 1:18 p.m. Thursday, DriveBC says, “The highway has reopened to northbound traffic at King George Boulevard.”
CityNews spoke to a farmer whose property lies next to Highway 99 near the crash area.
He says in the many decades he has lived there, numerous cars have careened off the highway into his fields. He says the situation warrants some sort of intervention on the bend of the highway near where this incident happened, such as some high-visibility barriers to keep people from making that mistake again.
Police are urging anyone who may have witnessed the crash or who has dashcam footage in the area of Highway 99 and King George in the time leading up to the crash to contact police at 604-599-0502 and quote file 24-100747.
