Why there’s a local cottage cheese shortage

If you love cottage cheese, you may have some trouble finding it right now.

There appears to be a shortage at some grocery stores in the Lower Mainland. Loblaw, which owns Superstore, says one of its suppliers is dealing with “operational issues,” but it didn’t go into detail.

“We are working diligently to ensure we get product back on shelf as quickly as possible and apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused,” the company said in a statement to 1130 NewsRadio.

Pattison Food Group, the parent company of Save-On-Foods, admits it’s also dealing with supply issues.

“One of our suppliers had planned maintenance at their facilities, resulting in a temporary disruption to its supply,” it said. “We are working closely with them and have sourced more cottage cheese options we expect to come in over the next few weeks at impacted stores.”

The company says this comes at a time when the item is spiking in popularity.

Cottage cheese is all over social media right now, as people share recipes from ice cream to flatbreads to dips using the dairy product, as it’s low in calories, fat, carbs, and sugar, but protein-rich. It’s also high in nutrients like calcium and B12.
