Vancouver police say an early morning shooting in the Gastown neighbourhood killed 1 person Thursday. Monika Gul reports.

The Vancouver Police Department says a person was killed in an early morning shooting in the city’s Gastown neighbourhood Thursday.

In a statement, Const. Tania Visintin explained police received reports that a man had been shot near East Cordova and Carrall streets just before 3:30 a.m.

“Despite attempts by first responders to save his life, the victim died before he could be taken to hospital,” she said.

“No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing. It is unknown at this time if the victim and suspect knew each other.”

The VPD taped off part of Carrall Street between East Hastings and Powell streets, and also blocked Cordova Street between Abbott and Columbia streets.

A white tent could be seen behind police tape, with dozens of VPD officers scouring the area. Just after 7:15 a.m., the BC Coroners Service arrived on scene, leaving the area around 8:30 a.m.

Visintin explains police have yet to identify the victim.

“We still don’t know what circumstances led up to this shooting,” Visintin told CityNews.

“We don’t know if an altercation occurred,” she continued. “I’m sure the community is very shaken up, rightfully so. We need anyone with information to call our investigators.”

Visintin adds police will be in the area throughout the day investigating.

“Anyone with information is asked to call the Vancouver Police Homicide Unit at 604-717-2500,” she said.
