Northern Lights dance over Metro Vancouver

The Aurora Borealis dazzled and danced over the skies of B.C. overnight into Friday.

But if you weren’t able to catch a glimpse of them then, you’ll have plenty more opportunities, 1130 NewsRadio meteorologist Michael Kuss explains.

“A massive geomagnetic storm continues to push plasma toward the Earth’s atmosphere, and so if you missed last night’s Northern Lights, you’ll have the opportunity again this evening,” he explained.

Kuss says while it might not be as intense as Thursday night,” the activity still pushes across the Lower Mainland through Friday evening and into early Saturday morning.”

“The geomagnetic storm is an intense one, and in fact, being described as severe,” Kuss added.

Cloud cover is expected for much of Friday, he says, but it should clear around 9:30 p.m., just in time for you to head out and take the Aurora in.

“So, from 10 p.m. onward, it’s mainly clear sky across the Lower Mainland,” Kuss said.

Plenty of people across North America took to social media on Thursday night to share their footage of the Northern Lights.

It’s the second time this year that a storm of this intensity has dazzled the night skies. In May, much of Metro Vancouver and Southern B.C.’s skies were lit up by an Aurora.

For the best chances at seeing the Northern Lights, Kuss says you should try to get away from artificial light like street lights.
