The Coquitlam RCMP says it is investigating an incident in a shopping plaza on North Road Sunday morning.
Police say they were called out to a structure fire in the complex shortly before 6:30 a.m.
“We had a call from Coquitlam Fire and Rescue who let us know there was a fire at 341 North Road in Coquitlam,” Const. John Graham told 1130 NewsRadio.
“Coquitlam RCMP responded. The fire is being investigated by Coquitlam RCMP and Coquitlam Fire and Rescue.”
Graham says that so far, they don’t have any confirmed injuries or victims.
“Businesses would have been closed at that hour of the day,” he said.
Extensive damage to the plaza is visible.
Graham says it isn’t clear how many businesses have been affected or whether or not the incident is suspicious.
“It is still in the early stages of the investigation,” he said.
Emily Oh, a realtor at one of the damaged businesses, says she now has to cancel and relocate meetings with her clients to another office.
“We have all our documents here. This is our main office,” Oh said.
“We have another one in Langley, however my conveyancer works here. So all of our documents are here, the computers are here.”
She says the plaza also has a hair salon, a travel agency, and a number of restaurants.
The plaza remains closed to the public pending further investigation, Graham says.
The section of North Road between Lougheed Highway and Highway 1 was closed in both directions Sunday morning due to the fire, but it had reopened by the early afternoon.
Anyone with any information or video footage is asked to call the Coquitlam RCMP and quote file number 2024-34159.
