Stanley Park seawall closes as rainfall warning in effect across Metro Vancouver

The Vancouver Park Board says the Stanley Park seawall has been closed until further notice due to heavy rain.

The closure stretches from Third Beach to the Lions Gate Bridge.

Residents are advised to follow signage in the area.

This comes as Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning for Metro Vancouver, the Sunshine Coast, and the Fraser Valley, with a total possible rainfall of 75 to 120 millimetres between Sunday morning and Monday.

“The heaviest rainfall is expected today and tonight,” Environment Canada said Sunday.

“Periods of rain will continue into Monday before tapering off in the evening.”

Heading east towards Abbotsford, the heaviest rainfall is expected overnight and into Monday morning.

The weather agency says freezing levels are expected to rise Sunday and remain elevated into the first half of the week.

Rainfall will vary by region, it says.

“The highest amounts will be near the coastal mountains, from the North Shore through the Coquitlam region,” the warning said.

“By Monday afternoon, between 80 to 120 mm can be expected. The remaining regions can expect 75 to 100 mm.”

Localized flooding is possible in low-lying areas.

Additional shelter spaces open

The City of Vancouver has opened additional shelter spaces in response to the storm.

Extra spaces are available at the following shelters through Sunday:

• Directions Youth Services Centre, 1138 Burrard Street;
• Aboriginal Front Door, 390 Main Street;
• The Salvation Army Belkin House, 555 Homer Street;
• OPS Overnight EWR Shelter, 141 East Hastings;
• Commercial-Hastings EWR, 1726 East Hastings;
• Kiwassa Neighbourhood House EWR Shelter, 2425 Oxford Street; and
• Marpole Neighbourhood House EWR Shelter, 8585 Hudson Street.
