Prince George RCMP investigates police-involved shooting

The Prince George RCMP reports that it is investigating a police-involved shooting incident that occurred near Prince George on Tuesday evening, around 7:30 p.m.

According to the RCMP, a man fired gunshots toward police officers and then escaped in a dark-coloured Volvo.

Later on, RCMP Prince George officers located the car near a forest service road.

Once police approached the scene, gunfire was exchanged between the suspect and police officers.

The driver of the Volvo sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a hospital for treatment, the police say.

The police are not reporting any injured officers.

In an update Wednesday, Mounties say they have notified the Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) of the incident.

The IIO is now investigating, additionally to the Prince George RCMP Serious Crime Unit.

Multiple other support units joined police officers, including the North District Emergency Response Team, the police helicopter Air 3, and police dog service units.

For a few hours on Tuesday evening, RCMP shut down Highway 16 in both directions between Upper Fraser Road and the Willow River rest area.
