Many Vancouver pumps are advertising $1.83 per litre Monday morning. A survey of 427 stations in the Metro Vancouver area found an average price of $1.76 per litre Sunday — up 12.6 cents per litre in the past week.

Experts at GasBuddy.com say a looming refinery shutdown in California is partly to blame.

Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy, says, “Most provinces saw gasoline prices rise over the last week, led by notable increases in British Columbia.”

But he says relief could be on its way.

“With the switch to winter gasoline just around the corner, we could see some price relief later this month if oil prices remain stable and regional issues begin to resolve. Additionally, OPEC+ announced an increase in oil production starting in October, which could help keep oil prices lower for longer.”

On Sunday, average gas prices in Vancouver were 3.1 cents per litre higher than the day one year ago, and 9.1 cents per litre higher than one month ago.
