Crews have reopened 15th Street at Esquimalt Avenue in West Vancouver after a structure fire in the area was extinguished, the District of West Vancouver tells 1130 NewsRadio.
The blaze was on the second floor of an apartment building on that corner, communications manager Natalie Roizman says.
West Vancouver Fire & Rescue (WVFR) was called to the scene shortly before 5 p.m. Thursday, Roizman said.
“Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy black smoke and high heat conditions in one residential suite,” she said.
“Crews…made entry and successfully extinguished the fire. The resident of the unit was safely evacuated by a neighbour prior to WVFR’s arrival.”
One injury was reported after a resident tripped and fell.
Some residents have been allowed to return to their units, but others remain displaced, Roizman says.
“BC Housing is on site and will be coordinating fire watch through a security company,” she said.
“North Shore Emergency Management is also on scene assessing the needs of displaced residents, particularly those on the second floor, many of whom have mobility or medical challenges.”
Roizman says it isn’t clear how many residents were displaced, but she says the District is aware of seven units that require temporary accommodation.
