Crews responded to a structure fire in Delta near Highway 17 and the Alex Fraser Bridge Thursday morning.
Delta Fire tells 1130 NewsRadio it was called to the property, located on Alaska Way, shortly after 9 a.m. As of 1:30 p.m., the blaze was under control, but fire crews were still working to fully extinguish it.
Images from the scene show firefighters surrounding a building, formerly a sawmill, engulfed in flames.
The Metro Vancouver Regional District (MVRD) says it is aware of the fire and is monitoring air quality.
“The smoke plume traveled eastward from the site and over Richmond,” said MVRD air quality planner Geoff Doerksen.
“The air contaminant of most concern in this case is fine particulate matter, which are tiny particles in the air that may impact health.”
Doerksen says slightly elevated levels of fine particulate matter were seen for a “few hours” after the fire started, but levels remain well below the region’s air quality objective.
DriveBC reports that Highway 17 remains opens.
The same structure caught fire in April 2024. Crews reportedly battled the 2024 fire for over 12 hours.
A witness at the time had said multiple stacks of dried lumber were on fire under a canopy structure, and an excavator had to be brought in to move wood around so firefighters could extinguish the fire.

The cause is unclear, Delta Fire says. No injuries have been reported.
Residents are asked to avoid the area and take precautions if they are affected by the smoke, such as closing windows and staying indoors.
