NORTH VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A 57-year-old woman has died from her injuries after she was hit by a car on Thursday.
Mounties say the woman and a 49-year-old man were crossing Fell Avenue at West 3rd Street around 10:30 a.m. at a marked intersection when they were both hit by the same car turning left on a green light.
“The vehicle was turning left and didn’t see them,” says Corporal Richard De Jong.
The man was treated for minor injuries at the scene, but the woman was rushed to hospital with what were described as serious injuries. She later died.
While the collision did happen in a controlled, marked intersection, Mounties are reminding everyone — pedestrians, cyclists and drivers — to always exercise extra caution.
The North Vancouver RCMP says the driver, a 71-year-old man, did stay at the scene. There’s still no word on what exactly caused this crash.
“At this point we’re taking witness statements, seeing if there are any cameras at the businesses nearby and trying to piece together exactly what sequence the light was in–who had the walk, who had the green, who had the red.”
He says expect the unexpected, and make sure to look around before you cross or proceed through the intersection as the situation is always fluid. And don’t distracted drive or distracted walk.
“Look both ways,” he says. “Be alert.”
