A person has died after a tree fell onto vehicles in South Vancouver Tuesday during the evening commute.
At around 5 p.m., two cars were travelling along Marine Way near the River District Crossing when the tree cracked in half and fell onto the two vehicles. Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services says the driver of a black sedan was killed.
The tree also fell on the hood of a white SUV behind the black sedan, both occupants of the SUV survived.
Alex, a witness who lives in the building facing the crash told CityNews he and his fiancé were standing outside when the tree fell on the cars.
“My fiancé heard a crack and we turned around and saw [the tree] just completely collapsed on that car in front of us. You just have those moments when you know something’s fatal. We almost just knew immediately and I called 911,” Alex explained.
Alex said his fiancé began crying instantly as people swarmed the vehicles to check on the occupants. According to Alex, the tree appeared to be longer than 40 feet.
Fire crews and Vancouver Park Board Arborists were on the scene to remove the tree until late in the evening. The BC Coroners Service is also investigating.
Traffic was closed in the area but has since reopened.
