Atmospheric river brings snow to Lower Mainland

While it’s still raining heavily in Vancouver Friday, some parts of the Lower Mainland received snow overnight and into the morning.

CityNews Meteorologist Michael Kuss says while lots of places saw snow, not a lot of places had snow that “stuck around.”

“There was snow reported in the British Properties above about 300 metres, even 200 metres [there were] some flakes flying around North Vancouver,” he said. “Same story for the Tri-Cities, the Westwood Plateau had snow that stuck around, and is still on the ground. Up at SFU, not substantial but a slushy mix up there, and that’s around a 500-metre elevation.”

Kuss says it’s ski resorts on the North Shore that saw the most amount of snow overnight.

“It’s been all snow on the North Shore mountains — 30 to 40 centimetres of snow, at least a foot and a half of snow we’re talking about here, up on the North Shore ski hills. Now, that will transition over to rain today but not wash it all away.”

Highway 99 between Squamish and Whistler, Highway 3 near Manning Park, and the Coquihalla Highway all saw snow fall overnight too.

And we’re not done with the snow just yet, Kuss says the region will see more snow on Sunday and into Monday.
