The beautiful game has turned into an expensive game for a North Vancouver recreational soccer player, who has been ordered to pay over $100,000 after being sued by a fellow competitor.
According to a B.C. Supreme Court ruling published on March 9, Karl Cox performed a slide tackle on Jordan Miller during a game in May of 2018 at North Vancouver’s Windsor soccer field.
The ruling says the tackle resulted in Miller falling face down and dislocating his shoulder. At the time, Cox received a yellow card while Miller’s team was awarded a penalty shot.

The documents state several of Miller’s teammates testified that Cox’s slide tackle was initiated from behind. Cox maintained that he didn’t intend to injure Miller and that the slide tackle was not “reckless.”
However, in Justice Wendy A. Baker’s ruling, she said Cox’s actions were “dangerous and reckless,” rejecting the defendant’s account of what happened.
“All the witnesses before me acknowledged that slide tackles are permitted and injuries are a part of the game. However, I find that the players in this league did not consent to dangerous and reckless conduct, such as that undertaken by Mr. Cox, which carries with it the risk of severe injury,” her ruling said.
It was ruled that Cox has to pay $103,764.11 in damages for medical costs and liability.
