‘Targeted, specific security threat’ toward student closes Capilano University North Van campuses

Students and staff were told not to come to Capilano University’s North Vancouver campus on Friday. The closure comes after a ‘targeted specific security threat’ towards one student.

Capilano University’s North Shore campuses are closed Friday due to what the university describes as a “targeted, specific security threat.”

“Do not come to either campus,” the university shared online.

In a statement to CityNews, CapU President Paul Dangerfield shared that the university “became aware that a student at the University had been threatened with violence by another student” on Thursday, prompting the shutdown of campuses.

“Violence, intimidation and bullying is unacceptable at Capilano University. Appropriate authorities, including the police of jurisdiction, were notified and are following up as required to ensure the continued safety of the CapU community,” he added.

“We do not have reason to believe there is an ongoing threat to the safety and security of students. The campuses are expected to reopen as usual on Saturday, June 22.”

In a statement posted to social media, the North Vancouver RCMP confirmed it is investigating the threat.

“A safety plan has been discussed with all parties. No arrests have been made. Threats were directed towards one individual, no ongoing risk to others or public safety,” Mounties shared.
