IIO seeks witnesses to death of man while in Burnaby RCMP custody

The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) is asking for witnesses to come forward after a fatal incident involving the Burnaby RCMP.
Police say RCMP officers responded to a call on July 4 shortly after 4:30 p.m. on Hillview Street regarding a man “creating a disturbance.”
CLICK HERE TO LISTEN TO 1130 NEWSRADIO VANCOUVER LIVE!Once the police arrived and identified the man, who they say was possibly suffering from a mental health episode, the officers took him into custody.
Police explain that during the interaction, the man went into “medical distress.” Police say officers provided aid and transported the man to the hospital, where he later died.
The IIO says it was notified of the death the same day and is now investigating the incident.
The IIO is called in after any police-related incidents that result in death or serious injury, whether or not there are any allegations of wrongdoing.
