SURREY (NEWS 1130) — There was a somewhat tense misadventure for a visitor to Mud Bay in Surrey, who ended up getting stuck in the tidal flats.
The Surrey Fire Service responded to a call for help early Saturday afternoon, and successfully freed a woman from the quagmire she was trapped in, some 40 feet from the shoreline.
Rescue crews placed three ground ladders in the mud, and got her to shore before the tide came in. There were no injuries.

Ben Dirksen, Assistant Chief with the Surrey Fire Service, says it’s not the first time they had to retrieve someone stuck in the mud.
“I wouldn’t say it’s common, but it has happened before,” he said. “I would encourage people visiting the area to stick to the trails, absolutely.”
The beach at Mud Bay neighbours Boundary Bay and Crescent Beach, across from Delta.
Dirksen says the crews who work in the area are familiar with this kind of scenario, so they were able to quickly formulate a plan for the rescue.
He says he’s not aware of any signage warning people not to venture out into the tidal flats, but if they do, he recommends they proceed with caution.
