B.C. ‘most wanted’ fugitive dies in Ontario plane crash

A man from B.C. who was last week named the second-most wanted person in Canada has died in a plane crash in northwestern Ontario.

Gene Karl Lahrkamp, 36, was wanted in connection with the killing of a man in Thailand in February. On April 26, a $100,000 reward was offered for information leading to his arrest.

Four days later, he was aboard a small plane that crashed near Sioux Lookout in Ontario, police confirm. He and three others died.

A spokesperson for the Royal Canadian Air Force said the plane took off from Dryden, Ont. and had been on its way to Marathon, Ont. when it went down.

Lahrkamp was named in a list of the top 25 most wanted people in Canada, as part of the “Bolo” (Be On the Lookout) Program. The victim of the homicide he was accused of was Jimi Sandhu.

In February, Sandhu was shot several times in Thailand. The 32-year-old’s body was found that same month near a villa in Rawai Beach in the Muang district of Phuket. Sandhu was a former Canadian resident who police say was known to have been involved with the United Nations gang. He was deported to India, where he was a citizen, in 2016.

According to the Royal Thai Police, this was a targeted shooting and investigators believe Lahrkamp flew back to Canada in the days after Sandhu was killed.

INTERPOL issued Red Notices for the suspects, one of whom was arrested in Alberta within weeks. When Lahrkamp was named on the “Bolo” list last week, police said his last known address was in Trail, B.C. Investigators believed it was possible he was still in this province.
