Metro Vancouver gas prices drop ahead of September long weekend

Travel over the Labour Day long weekend is expected to ramp up as many Metro Vancouverites head out of town before the start of the school year — and there’s a little relief for those taking road trips.

Gas prices around Metro Vancouver have dropped slightly once again, with some stations posting a litre of regular for around 184.9 cents.

However, as has mostly been the case over the years, B.C. isn’t expected to see the same price declines as the rest of the country.

“In other markets, prices have fallen about 10 per cent since the start of the month and B.C. has not followed,” explained Paul Pasco, principal consultant at Kalibrate.

Gasoline prices have fallen significantly from their early-summer highs, to a national average of 161.1 cents per litre.

The last time retail fuel prices were that low was during the last week of February, just before the effects of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began to be felt at the pumps.

However, some relief is coming.

“With the recent decline in crude prices there is justification for consumers to see a 5 to 10 cent decrease in prices in the very near future,” Pasco added, noting an additional five-cent drop is possible over the coming days.

“Immediately in the coming weeks I don’t think it will exceed that,” he told CityNews.

The prices Metro Vancouver drivers are currently seeing may not be the highest they’ve seen over the past several months, but they also aren’t the lowest.

Drivers in this region pay some of the highest fuel taxes across the country. While other provinces have taken measures, such as scrapping their gas taxes, B.C. has instead opted to provide drivers with a one-time rebate, which some people are still waiting for.
