Vancouver businesses offering kids a trick-or-treating experience

Families in Vancouver’s West End, along with a couple of other neigbourhoods in the city will be able to trick-or-treat at some local businesses this Halloween.

After two pandemic Halloweens, the West End Business Improvement Association (BIA) is holding a “Trick or Treat on Denman Street.”

On Oct. 31, 32 businesses along Denman Street from Davie to Robson streets will be handing out candy to young trick-or-treaters.

Executive director at the BIA, Teri Smith, says the goal is to give back to the families that live in the neighbourhood.

“We have a lot of large-scale events that are in the West End, which is Pride and Celebration of Light, and so there’s a lot of people that come from all over the Lower Mainland,” she told CityNews. “So this provided an opportunity to really showcase our neighborhood and share how we put our community in front.”

It’s the first time the BIA has done a Halloween event like this, Smith says.

“It’s a great way to celebrate with our neighborhood. We have a lot of families living in the area. [It’s] a great opportunity to give back,” she said.

Smith says the BIA was only expecting to have up to 25 businesses sign up to participate in the event, which will have special signs in their windows to show that they’re participating.

“We surpassed that and we hope that we can build on this for next year and then add other elements to the Halloween event as well,” she said.

The Trick or Treat on Denman is one of a handful of events taking place around Vancouver on Monday. Yaletown, Marpole, and Mount Pleasant are all running similar-style events with participating businesses.
