Dawson Creek, B.C.’s new hospital replacement is one step closer

The B.C. Government and Northern Health are moving to the next step in replacing the Dawson Creek and District Hospital.

According to the government release, the new hospital’s design is roughly 60 per cent complete and continuing to advance, but Northern Health couldn’t reach a contractual agreement with the previously selected builder.

As a result, a new request for proposals will be issued later in January. A new builder should be selected from the requests within months and construction is expected to begin shortly after.

Funding for the project is provided by the provincial government via Northern Health and the Peace River Regional Hospital District.

The new hospital itself is set to be built on the territory of the Treaty 8 First Nations, the B.C. Government says the Treaty 8 will have major input in the project.

“Local First Nations will be consulted throughout the project to ensure culturally appropriate spaces are available, which will include a non-denominational spiritual room for use by people of all cultures and faiths,” the statement reads.

The new hospital is projected to finish construction and welcome patients in 2027, with the existing hospital to remain operational and take care of Dawson Creek in the meantime.
