Langley nurse has registration cancelled after ‘intimate relationship’ with client

A Langley nurse has had her registration cancelled for at least five years after the B.C. College of Nurses and Midwives found she had an “emotionally intimate relationship” with a vulnerable client.

In a disciplinary notice published to the BCCNM website Friday, the college says Sherri Hedberg engaged in and maintained the relationship with the client who was part of her caseload of patients.

The college says Hedberg allowed the client to stay overnight at her home, permitted his family member to stay at her home on separate occasions, cooked and shared meals together, and “engaged in other inappropriate physical contact.”

The college did not elaborate publically on what that physical contact was.

“BCCNM considered that breaches of professional boundaries in the nurse–client relationship where nurses engage in inappropriate relationships with clients in their care is professional misconduct, and conduct that harms patients and erodes trust in the profession,” the college said

The college cancelled Hedberg’s registration, and she is prohibited to reapply for a minimum of five years, it says.

“In the event that the Registrant reapplies for practising registration in the future, the Registrant will be required to satisfy the Registration Committee that they meet the requirements of fitness, competence, and good character.

“The Inquiry Committee is satisfied that the terms will protect the public.”
