NAV CANADA provides airport delay details online

Travellers flying into, out of, or through Vancouver International (YVR) and other major airports in Canada now have the ability to track NAV CANADA delays on social media.

The agency says it has created a new X — or Twitter — account to share updates as it experiences what it describes as “frontline air traffic services staffing challenges.”

“This occasionally impacts our ability to provide uninterrupted services at some major airports in Canada,” a statement reads. “While delays can be caused by many factors across multiple industry stakeholders, including NAV CANADA, we know that whatever the cause, delays are frustrating.”

NAV CANADA says it’s “committed” to doing what it can to support airports and airlines, adding it is “taking actions on many fronts to resolve” staffing challenges.

Regarding its online-specific initiatives, NAV CANADA says it will inform passengers of delays caused by air traffic management at YVR, Calgary International, Toronto Pearson International, and Montreal-Trudeau International airports through its new X account — @NavCanadaOps.

This, it says, is being done to “ensure travellers have access to accurate and timely information relevant to their travels.”

“Whether it is due to NAV CANADA staffing levels, weather, construction, or other similar factors, NAV CANADA will now share when implemented traffic management initiatives are causing average delays of 60 minutes or more, including status updates and information about our operations at Canada’s four largest airports,” the statement continues.

Situations like Ground Delay Programs (GDPs) that led to major delays at YVR on several occasions in recent months are examples of what would be included in these social media updates.

In one instance, NAV CANADA told CityNews it was enacting a temporary GDP “to address system capacity constraints due to unplanned absences.”

In its latest statement, the agency says safety will continue to be its priority.
