WestJet flight diverted to Vancouver because of fog

A jet circling over Metro Vancouver caught the attention of many Sunday.

Callers to CityNews reported seeing the WestJet airplane appearing to be in a holding pattern, leaving loopy contrails in its wake.

According to the airline, the flight was heading from Calgary to Nanaimo when it was forced to “hold east of Vancouver for approximately 60 minutes awaiting improvement in the weather” because of “extensive fog.”

“After the extensive weather hold the flight has diverted to Vancouver. Shortly after the decision was made to divert to Vancouver the weather in Nanaimo improved slightly, however not enough to land,” the statement from WestJet explains.

A number of people took to social media to share what they were seeing.

On Sunday, a fog advisory was issued for a large part of the South Coast, with Environment and Climate Change Canada warning of “near zero visibility” in some areas at times.

The agency warned the fog “may be hazardous for travel.”

“Areas in fog that fall below freezing will have a risk of developing slippery surfaces,” the advisory continued.
