Police say stolen taxi in East Van hit pedestrian; 1 person arrested

CityNews is learning a taxi that was allegedly stolen in East Vancouver Tuesday morning was involved in two hit-and-runs, one involving a pedestrian.

The Vancouver Police Department tells CityNews that at around 7:30 a.m., a stolen yellow taxi was “involved in a hit and run at Broadway and Kingsway” in the city’s Mount Pleasant neighbourhood.

Const. Tania Visintin adds the driver of the stolen vehicle then drove to Fraser Street and 37th Avenue, where they struck a pedestrian.

“VPD officers stopped the taxi at Main Street and Marine Drive,” Visintin said. “One police officer was injured and has been taken to hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.”

The VPD did not confirm the condition of the pedestrian who was hit.

One caller to CityNews at South East Marine Drive just after 7:45 a.m. said he had “never seen so many emergency vehicles.”

“There’s three ambulances and four police cars, and the northbound lane on Main Street is totally blocked. I can’t see the vehicles involved, but there’s so many flashing lights,” they described.

The Main Street and 12th Avenue intersection in East Vancouver was blocked, while Southeast Marine Drive and Main Street were also closed while police investigated. Both intersections have since reopened.

At least three VPD cruisers were damaged in the morning’s incidents. Visintin says an investigation is ongoing.
