One person is seriously injured after police shot a man in Surrey Sunday night. As Kier Junos reports, the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia is reviewing the incident, in which the RCMP says the man reportedly had a gun.

The Independent Investigations Office of BC has been called into Surrey after a police officer shot and seriously injured a man Sunday night.

In an update Monday afternoon, the BC RCMP says the incident happened near 152 Street and 104 Avenue after officers received reports of a “man with a gun.”

Police claim officers found the man who then ran away when approached.

“Shortly after, two police officers with the Surrey Police Service located the man who reportedly produced a weapon,” Corp. Alex Berube said in a statement.

“One of the officers discharged their firearm striking him. Medical assistance was provided and he was transported to hospital with serious injuries. Nobody else was injured.”

Footage has been posted to social media showing the alleged incident. The dark footage shows, what looks to be, police officers chasing after someone through a parking lot and gunshots ringing out. The footage has not been confirmed by officials.

Yet, Ron MacDonald with the IIO says the social media footage is still part of the investigation, which appears to be a highly complex case in its early stages.

At this point, MacDonald says it’s too early to say whether the victim fired a firearm at officers and those details are still being investigated.

“We have done our forensic investigation and we do have some thoughts about those details,” he said.

The civilian-led police oversight agency is called in any time there is an officer-related incident that results in serious harm or death.

Mounties say no further information will be provided as the incident is now under investigation by the IIO.
