2 hikers lost on Grouse Mountain overnight found at home: NSR

Two hikers who got separated from their group while hiking on the BCMC trail are safe after spending the night on Grouse Mountain. Monika Gul with more on what happened.

The two hikers who were missing atop Grouse Mountain overnight into Wednesday morning have been located, North Shore Rescue says.

Speaking to CityNews just after 9 a.m., the search manager Stan Sovdat confirmed the two men had been found at home after becoming separated from a group along the BCMC trail Tuesday evening.

The search and rescue group says it received a call around 12:40 a.m. after the RCMP was initially notified of the missing hikers around 9 p.m.

“Two of the hikers did not make it to the top where the other two were waiting for them. Unfortunately, the two who went ahead had the cell phones of the slower hikers in their backpack,” NSR explained.

NSR says it was able to head out overnight to search for the hikers, however, it “did not locate the subjects.”

Air and ground crews were back out there again Wednesday morning looking for the hikers.

However, Sovdat later expressed frustration, as NSR was notified that the men were safe and at home after resources were sent out again to continue the search.

“We don’t really know what the story is, when they got home,” Sovdat shared. “Did they get there last night? Why were their cell phones left at Grouse?”

“We started our our operation at midnight last night, and it’s just a little bit frustrating. I don’t know if they got off the mountain this morning and went home, or if they got home last night, but people need to be contacted as soon as possible.”

Sovdat is urging anyone thinking of heading out hiking to keep their cell phones with them at all times — not even in a backpack — and make sure you contact authorities as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, NSR also says it was called out to Kennedy Fall Trail Tuesday afternoon after a hiker dislocated their knee.

An aircrew responded with a physician and was able to long-line the woman out. NSR explains she was then transferred to the BC Emergency Health Services.
