Lower Mainland travellers should plan for extra time at the borders over the long weekend

The May long weekend has officially kicked off, and travellers are heading to border and the ferry terminals.

For anyone planning to drive to the U.S. this weekend, the Peace Arch and Pacific Highway border crossings have been seeing hours-long waits since Friday afternoon. As of Saturday morning, border lines were heavy, with a two-hour wait at the Pacific Truck Crossing — where the line backed up all the way to 8th Avenue — and almost two hours at Peace Arch.

Heavy lines are expected at all border crossings returning to Canada Monday.

It isn’t just the borders that are busy over the weekend. BC Ferries communications adviser Reet Sidhu says this is one of their busiest weekends for travel from Metro Vancouver to the Island and the Sunshine Coast.

“To meet demands, we’ve increased sailings on some of our busiest routes,” Sidhu said.

“We’re offering 350 More sailings, and we’ve actually added an early morning route from Vancouver to Swartz Bay.”
