West Vancouver violence leaves Ontario man facing 3 assault-related charges

A man from Ontario was arrested and charged with multiple offences after an incident in West Vancouver this week.

The West Vancouver Police Department says it was called to a short-term rental in the district’s British Properties neighbourhood on Tuesday evening.

The WVPD says multiple callers reported there was a “woman in distress with evident physical injuries.”

“Officers located the woman and determined that she had been the victim of a serious assault by her intimate partner while both were staying at a short-term rental [along] King Georges Way,” police said in a statement Thursday.

The WVPD says officers established a containment around the home, sparking warnings to avoid the area on Wednesday morning after they discovered the man was a “parolee from Ontario with a history of violence and possession of weapons including firearms.” Police say the man was also seen with a large knife in the rental.

“Just before 9:00 am on May 22nd the suspect surrendered to police in front of the residence and was transported to the WVPD,” police said.

The suspect has since been charged with three counts of assault-related offences.

“This was a serious and dynamic investigation for us with a lot of moving parts,” said Sgt. Chris Bigland.

“Intimate Partner Violence is a serious criminal offence with significantly different dynamics than other crimes. This event’s inclusion of a history of violence, drug and alcohol consumption and the possibility of firearms in a residential community required a thorough and calculated response.”

The suspect was remanded in custody awaiting his next court hearing on Friday. The charges have yet to be proven in court.
